Villa Rica Area Information

Villa Rica is a city in Carroll and Douglas Counties in Georgia. The population was approximately 4,000 at the 2000 census. Villa Rica is strategically located off Interstate 20 on the Carroll and Douglas County line, just 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta. As the second largest city in Carroll County, Villa Rica has a distinctive mix of quality living with planned residential communities, such as Mirror Lake, excellent recreational opportunities, and a substantial industrial base providing lucrative employment to local and area residents.

History

Villa Rica was originally settled in 1826 after gold was discovered in the area. This land was ceded by the Creek people in 1825 with the second Treaty of Indian Springs signed by Chief William McIntosh. In 1826, farmers and gold miners arrived in the area to what was then known as Hixtown. In 1832, Hixtown had over 2,000 residents. With the arrival of the new railroad line in 1882, Hixtown and Cheevestown combined to become the new City of Villa Rica. The name Villa Rica is derived from Spanish for "rich village" and the city’s name change was done to help promote the gold in the area.

Parks and Recreation

The "City of Gold" offers an amazing variety of recreational, athletic and fitness opportunities available for people of all ages, interests and abilities. Recreation is a part of the quality of life equation in this community, and Villa Rica is proud to provide this service to the citizens of the area and their guests.
